‘To be honest, it’s complicated’: training postgraduate students to work with emotions in qualitative research

Emotion is an integral part of the knowledge production process, yet rarely acknowledged within research methods teaching or textbooks. As educators, preparing students for fieldwork essential, and should go beyond skill-learning, towards building confidence in their ability to react both ethically appropriately during fieldwork. This paper reflects on supporting manage disruptiveness learning about role process while acknowledging as emotionally-driven practice. We outline why opportunities emotion are essential context a pan-social-science course postgraduates. Consideration given how space provided consider motivations, emotions, subjective engagement with research, broader consequences action. Two examples shared means create careful consideration potentially delivering strategy implementing pedagogy emotion.
